How to Understand Introverted Thinking

Introverted Thinking (Ti) is the fascinating and frustrating tertiary function of the INFJ. Introverted Thinking makes decisions based on theories and data processed internally. Ti develops systems and models to explain and understand how things work.

When developed, Ti can lead to amazing realizations and insights. However, because it’s an introverted function, these realizations can be hard to explain to other people.

The below table shows the cognitive function stack for the INFJ. You can read more about INFJ cognitive functions here.

Introverted Thinking in INFJs

Unlike Extraverted Thinking, Introverted Thinking prefers developing its own methods and systems and doesn’t always find graphs or processes helpful. While Extraverted Thinking is the “scientist,” Introverted Thinking is the “philosopher.” Ti appreciates facts, but won’t hesitate to question something if they come up with an alternative conclusion.

Introverting Thinking is an internal function and the third function of the INFJ. Therefore, INFJs experience difficulty expressing their thought processes to others. Even if to the INFJ, the conclusion makes perfect sense. However, since Ti seeks precision in communication, INFJs are usually able to explain an idea concisely once they have had time to process it.
